The firm was founded by Urbanist, Architect, Engineer and Professor at the Politecnico di Torino Franco Mellano in May 2000, taking the name of Studio Mellano Associati – Architettura e Urbanistica, associating together with Franco Mellano, Giorgio Sandrone, Paolo Cavaglià, Mauro Boetti, Silvia Pastore and Paolo Sobrino. The firm proved itself active immediately in the urban and territorial planning business, with a strong will to creating a close relationship between architecture and society.
In 2021, the firm renovates itself with the name SMAPROGETTI, emphasizing its objective of developing even more the culture of projects, from the urban to the architectonic scale, dealing with the needs of the world today and tomorrow.
